Bio-remediation Beyond Borders
The journey began with learning how to optimize resources through economics, while drawing insight from highly socialized organisms such as honeybees. This understanding led to practical work in rehabilitating polluted water within the country.
Over time, these efforts extended beyond national boundaries, encouraging other countries to utilize their local natural resources to restore and maintain healthy, vibrant water systems.

Dr. Yousaf Riaz’s dedicated advocacy for the recovery of “sick waters” began to gain regional attention, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management solutions. Recognizing the significance of this work, the SAARC Agriculture Centre Board of Governance decided to visit Pakistan to closely observe the innovative bio-remediation initiatives being carried out by the water-health-focused team at NIB.
From August 11–13, 2015, the SAARC Board of Governance delegation visited NIB, Pakistan. During their visit, they toured multiple project sites, engaged with local beneficiaries, interacted with scientists, and received comprehensive presentations and briefings on the bio-remediation models and their impact.
Deeply impressed by the practical outcomes and long-term vision of restoring water resources, the Board formally recognized these efforts. In acknowledgment of his pioneering contributions toward maintaining and restoring water health, Dr. Yousaf Riaz was presented with an appreciation award for his outstanding services in safeguarding vital water resources for sustainable development.
The project was developed and implemented by the NIB team under the leadership of Dr. Yousaf Riaz, Director, NIB. It received formal approval and financial support from COMCEC, reflecting its strategic importance at the international level. The initiative aimed to introduce and demonstrate the Pakistan Bio-remediation Model across member countries, offering a sustainable and scalable solution for restoring water and environmental health.
Following the successful completion of the project, a concluding ceremony was held in Islamabad, bringing together representatives from partner countries. The event served as a platform to share outcomes, lessons learned, and future opportunities for collaboration.
In recognition of the project’s success and its impactful contributions, Maroof Afzal, Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), presented an appreciation shield to Dr. Yousaf Riaz during the ceremony. The event was attended by project officials from all participating member countries, along with diplomats, scientists, and policymakers—underscoring the broad relevance and recognition of this pioneering work..
