The Book of Genesis begins with a profound truth: humanity was entrusted by the Creator to care for His Creation. This responsibility was not merely a suggestion; it was among the first commandments given to humankind — to live responsibly as stewards of the Earth, protecting and sustaining life for future generations.

Today, the world is witnessing severe climate change, environmental degradation, economic instability, food insecurity, water scarcity, and increasing social inequalities. In my perspective, these crises are deeply connected with humanity’s failure to honor the Creator’s commandment of “Creation Care.”

For decades, development has often been measured only through industrial growth, urban expansion, and material consumption, while neglecting the health of ecosystems, forests, water resources, biodiversity, and communities. Humanity has exploited nature instead of managing it responsibly. As a result, the balance between human beings and the rest of Creation has been disturbed.

Climate change is not only an environmental issue; it is also a spiritual and moral issue. Floods, droughts, heatwaves, pollution, and declining agricultural productivity are warning signs that humanity has moved away from responsible stewardship. When the Earth suffers, economies suffer. When water becomes polluted, communities become vulnerable. When forests disappear, livelihoods decline. The degradation of Creation ultimately leads to the degradation of humanity itself.

True economic development cannot exist without environmental sustainability. A healthy economy depends upon healthy ecosystems. Clean water, fertile soil, pollinators, forests, biodiversity, and a stable climate are all part of the Creator’s provision for sustaining life on Planet Earth.

As believers and responsible citizens, we must redefine development by integrating Creation Care into our daily lives, institutions, policies, and economic systems. We need to promote sustainable agriculture, responsible consumption, renewable energy, waste management, water conservation, and environmental education. Most importantly, we must rebuild a spiritual understanding that caring for Creation is part of our obedience to the Creator.

The Earth is not merely a resource to exploit; it is a trust given by God to humanity. Ignoring this trust has contributed to climate change and social and economic degradation across the world.

The time has come for humanity to reconnect science, spirituality, and sustainability for the protection of our common home. By restoring our relationship with Creation, we can also restore hope, justice, peace, and resilience for future generations.

“Creation Care is not optional; it is a sacred responsibility entrusted to humanity by the Creator.”
